The College of Arts & SciencesRegardless of your major, the College of Arts and Sciences at Fort Valley State University will play a vital role in providing the student with the depth and breadth of knowledge required by twenty-first century employers.

Your first introduction to outstanding faculty of the CAS will, take place in the courses which make up the 60 hours of the Core Curriculum which are required of all bachelor’s degree-seeking students. These courses are designed not only to prepare you to excel in a challenging labor market as they sharpen such essential skills as writing, mathematics, and public speaking.

These courses are also designed to broaden your horizons. History, Sociology, and Political Science courses allow you to establish a firm sense of how you came to be where you are and where you plan on going in this world. Fine Arts, Literature, and Philosophy courses are designed to make you, perhaps for the first time in your life, truthfully examine the world around you and the world within. Courses in the “hard” sciences open your mind to the wonder and beauty of life and the universe around us. Biology and Zoology show us both the miracle and the majestic diversity of life while Physics shows us that matter, at the quantum level, engages in behavior that is both “spooky” and, regularly does what we once thought was impossible.

In addition to serving the Core Curriculum, The College of Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in majors ranging from Biology to Social Work. Among the highlights in undergraduate offerings are our new Forensics Science degree, new Sociology degree, and the success of our Business and Economics Department. The CAS also offers graduate Degrees in Graduate Health Sciences.

In addition to majors, most areas offer minors and certificates. These programs allow you, the student, to tailor your educational experience to best fit your desired outcome. For instance, a student who wants to go to Law School, may choose to Major in Criminal Justice and minor in English (or vice-versa) which would allow the student to pick up the training in the legal system as well as the necessary training in critical thinking, argumentation and writing the student would need to not only prepare her for law school; but to prepare her for her career. The combinations are endless and are limited only by your imagination.

Majors in the College of Arts and Sciences are also among the finest “pre-professional” degrees available in the region. If you are on your way to becoming a physician, dentist, pharmacist, attorney, or some similar profession; then you should know that the College of Arts and Sciences not only has the degree for you; the pre-professional programs at FVSU have exceptionally high placement rates for getting graduates into medical, dental, law, and veterinary schools.
