The term “palimpsest” is derived from the Greek for “again rubbed away” and refers to writing materials, such as parchment or papyrus from which the original text was removed so that the rare and expensive writing media could be reused. As a critical metaphor, “palimpsest” is meant to suggest to, in both readers of and contributors to the journal, that all areas of study have multiple layers of meaning which the scholar may discover, by “rubbing away” the old, to reveal new insight.
Creation of a scholarly journal would further FVSU’s goal of being an academic center. The journal is needed to allow scholars in the Liberal Arts opportunities to focus on the growth of knowledge and to enhance the role of FVSU in that growth. By bringing together a variety of disciplines the journal would also encourage cross pollination of disciplines and result in new approaches to problems. The new journal would break the mold of the typical academic journal. It would be less conservative in its thinking and consequently more innovative. Therefore it will draw the best scholarship from all of academe.
The new journal will encourage debate among scholars initially in the Southeast and eventually nationwide. It will also provide a place for their ideas to be disseminated. FVSU currently does not have such a vehicle. This publication would target social scientists and other scholars in humanities as well as other liberal arts fields; however it would be open to any scholar whose work addresses topics in these areas. The role of this journal is vital because it focuses attention on what’s most important: doing research that contributes to the study of and development of knowledge.
