March 8, 2013 - Fort Valley State University’s insightful undergraduates are regulars in the classroom, diligent note-takers and, perhaps, regulars in the university’s Hunt Memorial Library. In two weeks, these focused Wildcats will receive special honors for all of their hard work.
The university is honoring 600 of its highest-achieving scholars during the 62nd annual Honors Convocation at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21 in the Health and Physical Education Complex. At the annual ceremony, which celebrates academic excellence, fulltime undergrads, with cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or better, will be recognized for their distinguished academic achievements.
This year’s class of honorees includes National Dean’s List nominees; students elected to membership in regional, national and international honor societies; and recipients of special scholastic awards and departmental honors.
Dr. Larry E. Rivers, FVSU's eighth president, is the keynote speaker for the special occasion. The president will speak about the university’s past, present and future. Dr. Rivers is the author of the recently published book Rebels and Runaways, a book that chronicles slave resistance within the Sunshine State. The Florida Historical Society recently awarded his book the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Award, which he will receive at their annual conference on May 23-26.
This year’s ceremony will also feature two new awards for students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields: The Genevieve Knight Scholarship Award, and The Asadian Award (named in honor of Dr. Faribourz Asadian, an associate professor for the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences who died in January).
Following the convocation, a reception is planned for honorees and their guests. Classes will be suspended from 10:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. to accommodate students who will be attending the convocation.
The event is sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Inc., Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society and Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in the Social Sciences.
