The Testing Services Center provides the following institutional, state, and national examinations.

Tests

ACT

The ACT is a national examination used by many colleges and universities to obtain an assessment of students’ eligibility for admission. It is also used to provide an assessment of students’ academic skills and preparedness for college- level course work. The ACT is a paper- pencil test, with the exception of the Plus Writing Test, consisting of multiple-choice items in six areas: English, Reading, Mathematic, Science, and Reasoning.

The ACT assessment Test will be administered six times at Fort Valley State University during this academic year. The test dates are provided below:

  • September 13, 2008
  • October 25, 2008
  • December 13, 2008
  • February 7, 2009
  • April 4, 2009
  • June 13, 2009

Accuplacer

The Accuplacer is a computer-based examination, developed by the College Board that is used by Fort Valley State University for the purpose of obtaining an assessment of students’ knowledge and skills in English, reading, and mathematics. The Accuplacer is administered to all newly admitted students who have satisfied the institution’s admission requirements on SAT/ACT and College preparatory curriculum. Students may exempt taking the Accuplacer placement examination through the transferal of 30 or more earned academic credits from another fully-accredited college or university.

The Accuplacer consists of several skill areas including reading, sentence skills, arithmetic, elementary algebra, and college-level mathematics. Information provided by the results will assist academic advisors in their efforts to place students more appropriately in courses to maximize academic success.

CLEP

The College-Level-Examination (CLEP) is the most recognized credit-by-examination program in America today. The CLEP gives people of all ages and from varied backgrounds the opportunity to receive college credits for knowledge they have acquired through diverse life experiences. CLEP offers examinations in 34 introductory college-level courses.

Fort Valley State University does not currently administer the CLEP. To take the CLEP, students must secure an application from the Office of the Registrar. Approval to take the CLEP must also be obtained from the chairperson of students’ department of major. Applications for CLEP examination must be submitted three weeks in advance of the examination’s administration date. The awarding of credit through CLEP will be determined by students’ academic department or college of major. Information pertaining to specific guidelines regarding CLEP should be obtained from the Office of the Registrar and students’ specific department or college of major.

COMPAS

The COMPASS is used as a placement examination at Fort Valley State University. The purpose of the placement examination is to obtain an assessment of students’ academic preparedness to undertake college-level course work. The COMPASS is administered at the beginning of each semester. Students who fall below the institution’s requirements on the SAT, ACT, or College Preparatory Curriculum are required to take the COMPASS. Placement requirements at Fort Valley State University can be satisfied in the following ways:

Obtain required SAT/ACT scores and complete College Preparatory Curriculum requirements.
Transfer course credits that reflect proficiency (“C” or above) in English, reading, and mathematics.
Obtain at or above the required scores on COMPASS.

COMPASS is a comprehensive computerized adaptive testing system developed by ACT to assist institutions in their efforts to accurately place students in appropriate courses and, consequently, enhance the opportunity of achieving academic success. The COMPASS consists of three measures, namely, mathematics, reading, and writing. For additional information on COMPASS, visit ww.act.org . GRE

Fort Valley State University only administers the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Subject Test. The GRE- Subject Test is administered in the paper-pencil version. This test measures applicants’ undergraduate achievement in eight fields of study. Specifically, it measures achievement in the fields of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology. The GRE-Subject Test is designed to test students who have majored in the aforementioned fields of study.

The scores from the GRE-Subject Tests are used by admission officials as a common measurement to compare students’ qualifications and to obtain a more reliable judgment of students’ academic strengths and weaknesses. The GRE-Subject Test will be offered on the following dates:

  • November 8, 2008

On-Campus SAT

The SAT On-Campus is an institution-based administration of the SAT. Only students who have applied for admission to Fort Valley State University will be permitted to take the examination. The examination is administered to admission applicants who have not taken the regularly scheduled national SAT. The SAT On-Campus may be taken only once during a calendar year. SAT On-Campus scores can not be transferred to another college or university. Fort Valley State University traditionally administers the SAT On-Campus once during the summer semester.

LSAT

The LSAT is a national examination used by most Schools of Law to determine prospective students’ eligibility for admission. The LSAT provides an assessment of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills. The administration of the LSAT takes approximately a half-day. It is also a paper-based test.

The LSAT will be offered three times this academic year at Fort Valley State University. The test dates are provided below:

PRAXIS

The PRAXIS series are assessment instruments used by many colleges and universities to determine eligibility for admission to teacher education programs. The PRAXIS Series is also used by many state agencies to determine eligibility for teacher certification. Fort Valley State University offers the paper-based version of the PRAXIS II.

PRAXIS II involves the assessment of individuals’ acquired knowledge in general and specified subject areas. Only PRAXIS II (selected tests) is offered at Fort Valley State University. Fort Valley State University offers the paper-based version of the test. The PRAXIS Series II will be administered six times this academic year at Fort Valley State University on the following dates:

  • March 14, 2009
  • April 25, 2009
  • June 13, 2009

SAT I

The SAT I is a national examination that is used by many colleges and universities to obtain an assessment of students’ eligibility for admission. It is also used to provide an assessment of students’ academic skills and preparedness to undertake college-level course work. The SAT I is a paper-pencil test, with the exception of the Essay test, consisting mainly of multiple-choice items in eight sections. The essay writing section is the first section of the SAT I examination.

The entire administration of the SAT I spans approximately 3 hours and forty- five minutes. The test measures critical thinking, reasoning, and writing skills of college bound students. Admission officials use SAT I scores to obtain a reliable assessment of prospective students’ preparedness for college-level course work. Scores on the three major sections range from 200-800.

The SAT I will be administered five times this academic year at Fort Valley State University. Test dates are provided below:

SAT II

The SAT II or SAT Subject Test is a national standardized examination that is used by colleges and universities to assess prospective students’ knowledge in specific subject areas. The examination consists of five major subject tests, which are divided into 20 different subject tests. Fort Valley State University has specified the Subject Tests required for admission by candidates. Prospective students are encouraged to contact the Office of Admissions at (478) 825-6307 to obtain information concerning the specific required subject tests.

In general, Subject Tests are one hour in length and contain mostly multiple- choice test items. The Subject Tests are not based on any specific text books and, consequently, can be used to determine the academic achievement level of students from a diversity of backgrounds.

The SAT II or SAT Subject Test is usually administered on concurrent dates with SAT I and, only if, someone has registered for it. For additional information and registration, visit the SAT II website at www.collegeboard.org.
