Early Head Start Teacher’s Assistant

Job Summary:  The Early Head Start (EHS) Teacher’s Assistant will assist the Early Head Start Teacher in the supervision and care of infant and toddler age children in the Early Head Start Program. The assistant provides assistance to infant and toddler age children as well as in the implementation of program objectives and in providing responsible day care.

Based on the needs of the program, the Teacher ‘s Assistant may be assigned to any of the counties that are served (Taylor or Macon).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists teacher in classroom care giving routines
  • Assists in food service
  • Assists the teacher to work with individuals and groups of infants and toddlers
  • Assists in supervising and care of infant and toddler age children
  • Utilizes respectful individual and responsive care giving practices with infants and toddlers
  • Assists teacher in maintaining a clean, safe and orderly classroom environment
  • Assists children in bathroom procedures; performs diapering duties as necessary
  • Participates with teacher in home visits
  • Performs work on a day-to-day basis within the framework of standard policies and procedures
  • Assists with the implementation of emergency and first aid procedures
  • Attends meetings and in-services
  • Updates children records and orders classroom supplies (as needed)
  • Assists the teacher in maintaining a safe physical environment
  • Maintains an annual physical and Tuberculosis vaccination
  • Performs other duties as assigned



  • Associates degree in Early Childhood, Infant & Child Development, or related area OR a High School Diploma/GED with a CDA (Child Development Associate)
  • One year experience working in a childcare/daycare facility
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications (adult and pediatric)
  • Good communication skills, flexibility and teamwork


  • Experience working with children birth to three years of age

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Knowledge of infant and toddler growth and development principles and practices
  • Knowledge of effective child guidance practices and principles
  • Knowledge and experience in the philosophy and practices of Early Head Start (or comparable child development programs), early childhood education, developmentally appropriate practice, and bilingual education
  • Ability to successfully pass a drug screening and background check

 Working Conditions:

  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to and from one of the centers located in Taylor County or Macon County
  • Must be punctual and able to work Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p. m.
  • Must be able to work indoors as well as transition the classroom outdoors
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases
  • Possible exposure to blood and bodily fluids or tissues
  • Job requires sitting for long period of time (during planning and reporting) and standing for long periods of time (during observations and training), as well as stooping, squatting, and running

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear; lift and/or move up to 20 pounds
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Occasionally lift 20 pounds overhead and 40 pounds from waist to shoulder
  • Specific vision abilities required include close, distant and color visions, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate
