Mission Statement

The purpose of the Development Office at Fort Valley State University is to support the mission and priorities of the University. We engage in fundraising activities by raising funds and building partnerships that will assist the university in meeting its funding goals. We strive to create opportunities for meaningful participation with FVSU, to build positive relationships and to promote financial commitment to the University. We serve FVSU’s students, alumni, friends, and our colleagues with respect, honesty, and integrity while creating an environment of trust.

  • “We want to do our level best not to turn anyone away, because that one student who leaves may be the one person who has a cure for cancer.”

    -President Larry E. Rivers,
22nd Annual Black History Month Scholarship Luncheon

Since its inception in 1987, FVSU’s Black History Month Scholarship Luncheon has generated more than $1.5 million in scholarships making it the university’s single largest scholarship fundraiser. In 2010, proceeds raised from the event helped to provide nearly 200 deserving FVSU students with scholarships to defray the costs of further education. As of May 5, 2011, $121,153.48 has been raised from the 2011 Black History Month Scholarship Luncheon.

The annual scholarship luncheon is held the third Monday in February (President’s Day). Lunch is served at 12:00 p.m. followed by the scheduled program. Each luncheon will introduce our scholarship recipients, legacy award recipients, have a keynote speaker and recognize our sponsors.

  • Through this outstanding series, we honor the life of John Wesley Davison, leader of the founders of Fort Valley State College and the first principal of the Fort Valley High & Industrial School. Established in 2002, the purpose of the John W. Davison Lecture Series is to emphasize to the students and others that education extends beyond the classroom. The John W. Davison Lecture Series provides the opportunity to showcase individuals who have become successful in their chosen fields of endeavor; such a showcase provides much-needed role models for students and others. In other words, the series helps students to see a direct connection between their experiences as undergraduates and the abundance of opportunities that exist outside the walls of this great university.

We feel that the continuation of the John W. Davison Lecture Series will empower students, faculty, staff, and the community to believe that The Fort Valley State University is indeed “A Light for Your Path!”
