Fort Valley State University president announces two new appointments to his leadership team

April 16, 2014 –In an ongoing effort to enhance campus leadership and support key strategic initiatives, Fort Valley State University President Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith recently announced the addition of two new cabinet members.

The new members are Dr. Isaac J. Crumbly, associate vice president for Careers and Collaborative Programs and founder/director of the Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP), and Dr. Joshua W. Murfree, Jr., director of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The promotions will become effective May 1.

“These new, accomplished and dedicated individuals will serve a critical role in some of the priority initiatives underway at Fort Valley State University,” Griffith said. “I am excited to add them to our team, and I am confident they will both be valuable additions to my administration as we address various challenges and identify new opportunities. I look forward to working closely with them both.”

Crumbly was a biology professor at Fort Valley State in 1983 when he founded CDEP, a program to increase the number of women and minorities working in the energy industry. He also created an early outreach program for pre-college students to prepare them for college-level math and science courses called the Math, Science and Engineering Academy (MSEA). Both programs have since become models for other schools.

For his innovation and dedication, Crumbly has received numerous awards, including a letter of commendation from President Ronald Reagan for exemplary achievements as an educator, researcher and role model; the U.S. Department of Energy Award for Energy Innovation; the National Society of Black Engineers’ “Golden Torch Award” for Lifetime Achievement in Academia; and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Special Award for leadership.

Crumbly has a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture from Arkansas A.M. & N. College, now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff; a Master of Science degree in horticulture from the University of Illinois; and a doctoral degree in botany from North Dakota State University.

Murfree joined the institution in the fall of 2013 with plans to build a comprehensive, competitive and self-sustained athletic program at Fort Valley State where student-athletes are placed in the right position to learn, succeed, achieve and win. He formerly served as the executive assistant to the president, administrative chief of staff and director of athletics at Albany State University, as well as interim vice president of the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. The former chairman of the Albany State University Department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work also is a former tenured professor at ASU. Prior to his position at Fort Valley State, Murfreeserved as the 14th superintendent of schools in Albany, Ga.
