April 26, 2013 –Commencement marks the end of a long journey for Fort Valley State University students who’ve sacrificed and studied hard to earn their degrees. On Saturday, May 4, when graduates turn their tassels to celebrate the end of their academic careers, a distinguished alumnus will provide sage advice to help graduates continue on the path to success.
The Honorable Calvin Smyre, FVSU Foundation, Inc. chairman and Georgia House of Representative member representing the 132nd district, is the keynote speaker forFVSU’s 72nd annual spring commencement ceremony. The event takes place Saturday, May 4 in the Health and Physical Education Complex on the FVSU campus.
Smyre earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a minor in accounting from FVSU.
After college, the dynamic leader became a community organizer, and helped to reduce economic disparities as the director for the “War on Poverty” program in Columbus, Ga.
Currently, the elected official works within the business sector as the executive vice president for corporate external affairs at the Synovus Corporation. He also provides leadership as the Synovus Foundation president, and served on the company’s eight-member Corporate Executive Group.
In 1974, citizens elected Smyre— who was 27 years old at the time—to the Georgia House of Representatives. The representative has been as a legislator for more than 38 years. He is currently the Dean of the House of Representatives and a member of the Appropriations, Rules and Higher Education panel, one the most important in the House. The politician also works on the Appropriations Committee, which helps to delegate the $18 billion state budget.
Nationally, the politician serves as the president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators Foundation and was the organization’s immediate past president. Additionally, he belongs to the National Conference of State Legislators, and is aSynovus representative on the Financial Services Roundtable (FSR). All three groups are headquartered in Washington, D.C.
