The late Ralph P. Malone, who once served as Fort Valley State University’s director of Career Development and Planning from 1965 to 1988, believed that Wildcat students had the skills to succeed in corporate America with good advice from a mentor.

In 1967, Malone launched the campus’s first Youth Motivation Task Force with the help of the National Alliance of Business to help students to finish their education and pursue a positive career path. In 1992, the Youth Motivation Task Force Program was renamed the Ralph P. Malone Youth Motivation Task Force Program in his honor.

In 2016, the program will celebrate a golden anniversary. From April 12-14, the university will host the 50th Anniversary Ralph P. Malone Youth Motivation Task Force conference. The program brings back distinguished alumni and community role models who help university students and high school students learn about career and academic excellence.

The highlight of the event will be a special assembly program held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, in the C.W. Pettigrew Center auditorium. The keynote speaker is Michael L. Thurmond,  counsel to the Butler, Wooten, Cheeley & Peak law firm, located in Atlanta and Columbus.

Thurmond is the former superintendent of the DeKalb County School District, the third largest district in the state of Georgia. In Nov. 1998, He was elected Georgia Labor Commissioner, becoming the first non-incumbent African American to be elected to statewide office in Georgia.

“During the three-day conference, entrepreneurs, professors and business owners, most of them who are alums, will visit the campus, and conduct classroom presentations and motivational talks to our students about how they succeeded in the business world on campus,” said Romelda Simmons, FVSU’s director of Career and Alumni Services. “In addition, these mentors will also conduct motivational talks to high school students at Peach County High School.”
