Global Initiatives Council

Welcome to the Fort Valley State University's
Global Initiatives Council Webpage

"Man's struggle to be rational about himself, about his relationship to his own society and to other peoples and nations involves a constant search for understanding among all peoples and all cultures--a search that can only be effective when learning is pursued on a worldwide basis."Senator William J. Fulbright

"In Globalization 1.0, which began around 1492, the world went from size large to size medium. In Globalization 2.0, the era that introduced us to multinational companies, it went from size medium to size small. And, then around 2000 came Globalization 3.0, in which the world went from being small to tiny."Thomas Friedman, The World is Flat

About Us

The Global Initiatives Council was established in October 2013 by Dr. Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith, president of Fort Valley State University, as part of a global agenda, to help leverage the talent, treasure, and time of individuals and organizations that can facilitate programmatic, resource, and research partnerships with FVSU. Dr. Ivor Mitchell, distinguished professor of marketing and international business at Clark Atlanta University and director of their Center for Global Partnership and Growth, is the council’s founding chair.

  • The Fort Valley State University Global Initiatives Council’s (FVSUGIC) will enable Fort Valley State University to pursue a comprehensive international engagement agenda, in keeping with the University’s educational and economic objectives and consonant with its strategic priorities.

  • FVSUGIC will aid the University in becoming one of Georgia’s top 10 public universities recognized for high-quality international programming by 2020.

  • In pursuit of our Mission and Vision, FVSUGIC will facilitate the following aims:

    1. Recruit international students for undergraduate and graduate degree programs;
    2. Acquire corporate, grant, foundation, international governmental, and other resources to sustain teaching, research, and other initiatives;
    3. Create sustained study abroad programs and cultural and sporting exchanges;
    4. Strengthen international faculty collaboration, especially in relation to opportunities to pursue research grants and contracts.
  • In an effort to stream-line our pursuits, engagement will revolve around the following areas:

    1. Academic Initiatives (facilitating recruitment of students; faculty exchange; study abroad; research partnerships);
    2. Agricultural and Allied Health Initiatives (enhancing existing agricultural and related research and extension collaboration; exploring allied health opportunities; center for homeland and global food security);
    3. Resource Initiatives (scholarships; grants; endowments; corporate partnerships);
    4. Cultural and Social Initiatives (soccer and other sports recruitment, visits, and competitions; visits to campus by foreign cultural, sports, and other groups and personalities; visits abroad by FVSU musical and artistic groups).
  • FVSUGIC will utilize core strengths that undergird society’s underlying values and leverage approaches that have proven successful in other educational institutions, notably:

    1. Go-to-the-Job-Market Capabilities and Alumni Relationships Globally, by adjusting curricula and enhancing alumni relationships, through recruiting and educating students from all over the world for job opportunities in public and private sector global markets
    2. Efficiency and Equity through Economies of Scale & Excellence, by leveraging FVSU’s land-grant status and proximity to Atlanta to forge organizational partnerships and alliances. Research will be the hallmark of all endeavors. We will establish a culture of evidence, guided by inclusion, transparency and appropriate technology intended to produce value-added educational outcomes.
    3. Image and Brand-building developing Walls of Wisdom and Centers of Excellence in education, agriculture, specialist health, entrepreneurship, and other areas, and by amplifying and enhancing the industrial development of middle Georgia, and building a rich portfolio of job-connected courses directly related to private-sector and public-sector demands.
    4. Innovation, by becoming a recognized technology and innovation leader through national and international collaboration with other universities, industry, and international governmental partners, in order to garner significant educational market share over time.
  • The Global Initiatives Council convenes leaders who donate talent, treasure and time to facilitate programmatic, resource and research partnerships with Fort Valley State University.
