Guyanese Delegation visits FVSU
August 23, 2013 –A special, international delegation recently traveled to Peach County to learn about Fort Valley State University and support its new president, Dr. IvelawLloyd Griffith. The Guyana Association of Georgia, Inc. visited the campus on Saturday, Aug. 18 to learn about the university’s academic programs, their facilities and fundraising initiatives during a day-long visit.
The Guyana Association of Georgia, Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide a disciplined organization willing to help Guyanese natives within America.
“Our purpose for coming here today is that we were invited by the president,” said Dr. William Thomas, president of the Guyana Association of Georgia. Thomas said that this was his very first exposure to FVSU. “We came to the university to see what FVSU has to offer. We live in Atlanta, Ga., [but have] never heard of Fort Valley before.”
Dr. Griffith is a native of Guyana, a sovereign, Caribbean country located on the northern coast of South America. In its early history, the nation was first colonized by the Netherlands. Later, it became a British Colony, and remained one for more than 200 years. On May 26, 1966, Guyana finally gained its independence from the United Kingdom.
The international delegation arrived at 9 a.m. on Saturday, where they were quickly ushered out of the rain and into the Pettigrew Center. Following breakfast, a variety of speakers presented on topics related to the university programs and initiatives.
FVSU speakers included Associate Vice President of Business and Finance Dr. Dwayne Crew; Dean of the College of Agriculture, Family Science and Technology Dr. GovindKannan; Special Assistant for Strategic Initiatives Donavon O. Coley; Vice President for Student Success Willie Williams; and Vice President for External Affairs Dr. Melody L. Carter.
Later, the group met in a closed, executive session to discuss a potential partnership.
