Head Coach – Track & Field, and Cross Country

Job Summary:  The Head Coach – Cross Country/Track &Field is responsible for the daily management and administration of all phases of a Division II cross country/track & field program (men and women) in accordance with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), and Fort Valley State University (FVSU). The position requires aggressive recruitment strategies which will yield competitive student-athletes across both male and female students.

This is a fulltime, 12-month position that reports to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and manage all aspects of coaching the men/women’s team
  • Abide, comply, and enforce all applicable NCAA, SIAC, and FVSU policies, procedures, rules and regulations
  • Attend practices and competitions
  • Responsible for budget control, scheduling and travel arrangements
  • Organize and administer the recruitment of students and the practices of the student-athletes in a manner to produce the highest level of success
  • Coordinate and administer the academic progress and character building of the athletes to assist them in balancing athletics and academics in order to insure retention and academic success
  • Assist Athletics Department with fundraising endeavors
  • Perform summer duties and special projects as assigned by Director of Athletics
  • Maintain a positive relationship with the student-athletes, faculty, staff, community, media and other constituents
  • Participate in college, department, and administrative meetings and committees, as required/requested
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three (3) years coaching experience
  • First Aid, CPR/AED certification
  • NCAA certification or must be obtained within four weeks of hire
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA and SIAC rules and regulations governing recruitment, eligibility, and related functions
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience using MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with departmental and university personnel and administration
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in public relations activities, to include press conferences, recruitment events, and television and radio interviews
  • Demonstrated ability to handle high levels of stress and anxiety


  • Master’s degree qualifications to teach at the collegiate level
  • Previous head coaching experience at Division I or Division II university level
  • Knowledge and experience with the distribution of scholarship awards

Working Conditions:

  • Work hours – nontraditional (early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends)
  • Extensive travel required during seasons (weekdays and weekends)
  • Majority of work will be performed outdoors

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand or walk for an extended period of time
  • Must be able to bend, squat, kneel, reach overhead, lift overhead
  • Lift or carry up to 35 pounds
  • Drive university-approved vehicles while traveling on official University business
  • Ride long distances for official university business
  • Demonstrate/perform various movements and techniques related to cross country/track and field
