First Year Retention Experience (F.Y.R.E.)
The F.Y.R.E. program is structured for freshmen and transfer students to ensure a successful transition from high school or another institution into Fort Valley State University. The program is created as a partnership between the Center for Retention Services and the Division of Student Success and Enrollment to orient new students to the FVSU community, assist them in developing their academic and personal skills and encouraging students to be socially responsible.
1. The First Year Retention Experience will orient new students to the Fort Valley State University community.
Learning Outcome 1: Students will identify campus resources that will be key to their development as a FVSU student.
Learning Outcome 2: Students will exemplify an understanding of the history and traditions of the institution.
Learning Outcome 3: Students will work to participate in learning opportunities that will enhance them personally, intellectually and morally outside the classroom, such as lecture series, service learning opportunities and student success workshops.
2. The First Year Retention Experience will assist first year students in developing academic and personal skills.
Learning Outcome 1: Students will utilize Career Services to identify occupations that are compatible with their personality, ability and strength.
Learning Outcome 2: Students will learn how to utilize effective time management skills that will create a balanced schedule of academics and extracurricular activities.
Learning Outcome 3: Students will develop and understand how to apply critical thinking skills.
Learning Outcome 4: Students will identify academic difficulties and utilize the Center for Retention Services to establish an effective academic success plan.
Learning Outcome 5: Students will develop supportive relationships with peers, faculty, staff and other members of the FVSU community.
3. The First Year Retention Experience will encourage students to be socially responsible.
Learning Outcome 1: Students will recognize the importance of civic engagement and how their contributions affect the community, state, nation and world.
Learning Outcome 2: Students will practice socially responsible behavior by serving others through required community service projects.
