The College of Agriculture, Family Science, and Technology at Fort Valley State University is seeking applications for a creative, committed individual to fill a new position, Extension Equine Program Manager.

Responsibilities: 

This employee will report to the Associate Dean for Extension, and will be responsible mainly for the development and implementation of extension educational programs and services concerning equine animals, and the management of on-campus equine facilities and animals. This involves; (a) assisting Extension Specialists in assessing equine educational needs based on inputs from county leadership and the public, (b) assisting in developing a plan-of-work to address identified educational needs, (c) carrying out aforementioned educational plan-of-work, (d) managing facilities and animals (with the assistance of work-study students and other staff), to include feeding and otherwise caring for animals, (e) acquiring and maintaining supplies (including feed) and equipment, (f) training of animals to support riding lessons and limited equestrian sports, (g) providing riding lessons to university students and the public, (h) providing support to Student Equine Club, (i) assisting in hosting equine and equestrian events on-campus, and (j) providing reports and other efforts as necessary to promote the university’s equine animals, facilities and programs.

Qualifications: 

A baccalaureate degree in an agricultural or closely related academic area is required.
Candidates must have; (a) knowledge and successful experience in working with, training and caring for horses or other equine animals; (b) effective oral and written communication skills; (c) ability to work effectively with a diverse staff, students, extension staff and clientele; (d) planning and organizational skills; (e) ability to work independently and as a member of an extension team, proactive and self-motivation qualities being self directed; (f) willingness to assist in operating an agricultural arena and occasionally assist in hosting weekend events, and (g) a valid driver’s license.
