Under general supervision, the Food Service Worker (Cook) prepares and serves a variety of food items for Head Start centers; operates and maintains food service equipment, checks invoices and maintains an organized storage of inventory items while maintaining a safe, clean, and sanitary work environment.

The Fort Valley State University Head Start program serves four counties in Georgia – Crisp, Dooly, Macon, and Taylor. Based on the needs of the program, the Food Service Worker (Cook) may be assigned to any of these counties.


• Prepares a variety of food items from selected menus according to USDA and health department regulations and established procedures
• Check menus immediately upon arrival for a list of items to be prepared and proceed as directed
• Maintains quality preparation by following recipes provided
• Prepares items with efficiency to ensure that meals are served on schedule
• Assists in preparation of additional meals as requested
• Prepares special diet menus for students when requested
• Serves food items at scheduled mealtimes according to standardized procedures
• Assists Teachers by quickly and effectively serving food in a pleasant and courteous manner
• Maintains approved portion control guidelines as set by USDA
• Follows food handling procedures to help ensure the health and safety of students and staff
• Directs volunteers with proper food handling procedures
• Operates and maintains food service equipment and uses supplies appropriately
• Reports maintenance needs immediately to Food Service Manager
• Demonstrates cost awareness in the use of supplies
• Operates and maintains equipment according to manufacturer specifications and guidelines
• Checks invoices and maintains an organized storage of inventory items
• Thoroughly checks invoices to ensure that all items are accounted for and received in good condition
• Assists in maintaining organized storages of stock items
• Assists in maintaining inventory control
• Maintains a safe, clean, and sanitary work environment
• Performs cleaning duties including washing and sanitizing pots, pans, dishes, and utensils as well as cleaning the tables and carts and the removal of trash
• Thoroughly cleans equipment (mixer, grill oven etc) after use and prepares equipment for re-use
• Thoroughly cleans dish area after each meal and organizes dishes for next use
• Displays a high level of effort and commitment to performing work
• Operates effectively within the organizational structure
• Willing to relocate to another center within the program if needed
• Perform other duties as deemed necessary to the effective functioning of the program


• High school diploma or a GED
• At least 18 years of age
• Pass a drug screening and a background investigation
• Experience with large quantity food preparation preferred
• Demonstrated knowledge of proper cleaning methods and uses the correct chemicals
• Demonstrated knowledge of sanitation and safety practices
