Fort Valley State University will host a female empowerment event for students at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16 in the C.W. Pettigrew Center. Hosted by Miss FVSU Candice Howard and the Center for Retention Services, the Ladies Empowerment Evening will feature empowering activities and mentorship by female professionals. The guest speaker is Lecia J. Rives, motivational speaker, writer, comedienne and founder and president of SpeakuP! Enterprise.
Rives is also an author of “Get Up and Be Somebody,” an adjunct instructor of public speaking at Washington University, a contributing writer for In Magazine and a former feature writer for Heart & Soul Online. She is also the voice of the Get Up and Be Somebody® Motivational Moment on iHeart Radio in St. Louis, MO.
She received an undergraduate degree from Tennessee State University and a J.D. from Howard University School of Law.
Candice Howard and Joyce Brown, Royal Court advisor and director of academic counseling and differently abled services for the Center for Retention Services, invited Attorney Lecia Rives to FVSU.
“I first heard Ms. Rives at a student leadership event last year and was stirred by her message,” said Howard.
“We witnessed her ability to connect with the students and wanted our female student body to learn from her experiences and become empowered in their self-love, relationships and career choices,” said Brown.
Beyond delivering her personal experiences, Rives will share advice on dress, etiquette health issues, and finding a good support system.
The event is free and open to FVSU students. For additional details, contact the Center for Retention Services, (478) 822-1070.
