September 15, 2015 – A veteran Fort Valley State University professor is taking on a new position in the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology.
Dr. Syedmehdi Mobini, professor of veterinary science, will serve as interim assistant dean for academic programs effective immediately. “I appreciate the opportunity, and consider myself very lucky to be able to work with so many talented faculty and students in the college assisting the academic programs,” Mobini said.
Mobini, a veterinarian and educator with 38 years of experience, joined FVSU in January 1989 as an associate professor of veterinary science. From 2008-2013 he served as the head of the Department of Veterinary Science. The veteran educator is instrumental in obtaining the medical and surgical infrastructure needed for the department to gain full accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in 2008 and 2010 following complete AVMA site visits.
The FVSU professor’s veterinary expertise is in the area of sheep and goat disease prevention, surveillance, treatment, herd health management and reproductive management. For the past 20 years, he helped to develop the sheep and goat industry in Georgia and the Southeast by serving as a small ruminant extension veterinarian. He also works with the Georgia State Veterinarian, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s American Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Veterinary Service Area Veterinarians as a small ruminant disease specialist.
In addition, Mobini makes presentations at several national and international meetings such as AVMA conventions, and publishes scientific and extension articles on sheep and goat herd health management and reproduction. He served on the board of directors for the American Association of the Small Ruminant Practitioners, Animal Health Committee of American Sheep Industry, and AVMA Animal Welfare Committee. Mobini currently serves on the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association Board of Directors, American Veterinary Medical Association Legislative Advisory Committee, and AVMA House of Delegates.
The long-time educator earned his doctorate of veterinary medicine degree from Shiraz University, Iran in 1977, and a master’s degree in large animal medicine and surgery from Auburn University in 1981. Prior to his arrival at FVSU, Mobini served for eight years as associate professor of large animal medicine and surgery in Tuskegee University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.
“We are counting on Dr. Mobini’s experience and leadership skills to further enhance the quality and efficiency of program offerings in the College of Agriculture,” said Dr. Govind Kannan, dean of the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology.
Mobini can be reached at (478) 825-6427 or send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
