FVSU Adopts Bibb County Middle School

April 30, 2008

Against the backdrop of a postcard perfect day in the square where the Wildcat reins supreme, 100 Ballard Hudson Middle School students watched history in the making. The tweens applauded as Fort Valley State University President Larry E. Rivers signed a poster-sized agreement finalizing the adoption of their school. Administrators from both schools witnessed the signing that will enable BHMS students to receive mentoring at the university and prepare them for college. If the ‘cat could talk, he would’ve roared with approval.

According to Dr. Rivers, the agreement is similar to others signed with area schools. “We want to prepare students for college life,” he said. “We feel that by exposing them to FVSU early, we will help them get accepted at FVSU or any good college.”
The adoption ceremony began with Dr. Terrance Smith, vice president of student affairs introducing FVSU’s president to the crowd of excited students. “It’s a beautiful day for Ballard Hudson Middle School and FVSU,” said Dr. Smith. “We’re very excited about expanding the communiversity concept started by Dr. Rivers and on this day, the Wildcats adopt the Tigers.” Smith introduced his wife, Juliana, a BHMS special education teacher, and his brother, Terrell Smith, a graduation coach at the middle school. BHMS is located in Bibb County.

During a brief talk, Dr. Rivers’ described the partnership: “We are reaching out to work with you and help you. Collaborate with our professors about field trips and classes during the summer. Participate in our summer programs because we want you to develop into students who contribute to society.”

Tiaras glistened as Miss FVSU 2007-2008 Yahntaye Martin and first attendant Monique Johnson joined Mr. FVSU, Alexander Little, and first attendant Eric Johnson during an introduction. After the ceremony, students rocked to the beat of a step show.
