Sunday, June 8 marked the start of Fort Valley State University’s fourth annual Fine Arts Media Experience (FAME) camp. The camp, which runs through June 20, is an outreach project started by the university’s Fine Arts department to sharpen middle and high school students’ artistic skills, and recruit students interested in the arts.
“We’ll have several FVSU faculty, as well as clinicians and consultants from around the country participating in this year’s camp,” Leonard Giles, assistant professor of music, said. “They’ll be coming in to work with kids based on the areas of their expertise. We’re anticipating about 60 students this year.”
The camp, started through a Title III grant, is run by the university’s Fine Arts Department. Classes available to young people include band, orchestra, choir, drama, drawing, painting, three-dimensional projects, computer design, dance, photography, poetry, and video and radio production. Last year, 120 students participated in the camp.
Some students will stay overnight on FVSU’s campus; others will participate as day campers — their parents pick them up in the afternoon.
Parents can still enroll their children in FAME. The cost for day camp is $300 per student, for overnight campers, $525. For more information, contact the Department of Fine Arts at (478) 825-6387, or e-mail fame@fvsu.edu.
