Nontraditional students such as high school graduates with jobs, busy moms and laborers who never completed college now have six new academic programs to choose from at Fort Valley State University. The Georgia Board of Regents approved four online and two off-site programs. This month, the board approved online bachelor’s degree programs in political science, psychology and English (Technical English and Professional Writing) and off-site programs in criminal justice and business administration. This summer, the BOR approved an online criminal justice franchise. Designed for convenience, the offerings will meet the needs of people on the go.
“Lately, more and more students are inquiring about online programs, so with these four we’ll be able to satisfy the needs of many of them,” said Dr. Anna Holloway, coordinator of online instruction at FVSU. Holloway is also dean of graduate studies and extended education. “Students love online courses and adults find it an easier way to complete their education.”
Online students will be charged an e-tuition rate of $160 per credit hour. Holloway says the cost balances out since online students are not charged health and activity fees.
The criminal justice franchise is offered in conjunction with Darton College in Albany and Georgia Perimeter College in Atlanta. Both institutions offer criminal justice associate degrees. Juniors have the opportunity to continue classes online at FVSU and earn a bachelor’s. Visit Georgia OnMyLine at http://www.georgiaonmyline.org to register.
In January, FVSU will offer online bachelor degree programs in political science, psychology and English with a concentration in Technical and Professional writing. Students must apply to take classes through FVSU’s office of admissions.
The BOR also approved an off-site bachelor’s program for business administration with a concentration in management that will be offered at Geico’s Macon location for company employees only and off-site criminal justice programs in Atlanta and Forsyth at the Department of Corrections.
FVSU professors have received training in online course development at University System of Georgia workshops, according to Holloway, who says additional faculty will be hired to teach the new online and off-site programs.
