June 13, 2008

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) recently released the Commissioner’s All Academic Team. The list is comprised of athletes from all member institutions who have gained or maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2007-08 academic school year. A total of 458 student athletes from all member institutions were honored by the league, and 26 of them hailed from Fort Valley State University.

Leading the way for the Fort Valley State awardees were softball players Tawanna Barker and Jazmine McDaniel, both of whom finished the year with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Barker, a native of Fort Valley (who also played basketball), majors in animal science while McDaniel, who comes from Jonesboro, majors in middle grades education.

This is the second year for the Commissioner’ All Academic Team. It was created to recognize all student athletes in the conference who acquired or maintained at least a GPA of 3.0 during their collegiate years.
