September 16, 2010 – Georgia Trend magazine, celebrating its 25th anniversary in the September issue, recently named Fort Valley State University president Dr. Larry E. Rivers to its list of the “Top 25 Leaders in Georgia.”
Editors of the state’s leading business magazine included Dr. Rivers as an outstanding leader for the university’s exceptional progress. Among Rivers’ accomplishments areFVSU’s four-year enrollment boom from 1,900 to 4,200 students (among the highest in the state), its $160 million in campus capital projects (including the construction of a new student center, stadium and science building for biotechnology) and Rivers’ commitment to diversity.
FVSU, under Rivers’ leadership, is “open to all,” the magazine said.
“We have been increasing our non-black student enrollment with white, Hispanic and international students,” Rivers says in the article. “We put the word out that here is a university, paid for by Georgia taxpayers, where anyone of any race, creed or color can attain a quality education. In terms of faculty, FVSU is one of the most diverse institutions of higher learning in the University System of Georgia. Presently, faculty members consist of about 50 percent African-Americans, 38 percent whites and 12 percent Asians and others.”
Rivers was also honored for his “communiversity” work, including volunteering for several mentoring programs such as the 100 Black Men.
