Research Assistant (Agronomy)

The Research Assistant assists in setting up field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments and is resp0nsible for the maintenance of ongoing experiments which includes day-to-day data collection in the field and indoors, conducting chemical and statistical analyses of data.


  • Planting and maintaining field experimental plots
  • Collecting and analyzing greenhouse gas samples from field plots
  • Collecting soil and plant samples at appropriate intervals and preparing for appropriate analyses
  • Collecting field data related to plant physiology, plant morphology, and soil activities at designated times
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and reagents in good condition for an efficient working laboratory
  • Conducting laboratory analyses
  • Conducting statistical analysis of data
  • Harvesting field plots and collecting harvest and post-harvest data
  • Coordinating research work conducted by students
  • Performing other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or biological sciences
  • Knowledge and experience working with statistical software
  • Ability to work in field during summer and winter months
  • Valid driver’s license


  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Knowledge of setting up field experiments and harvest
  • Experience using instruments used in plant physiology research
  • Experience using laboratory instruments in soil elemental and plant quality analyses

Working conditions:

  • Regular work hours (8 am to 5 pm)
  • Extensive outdoor (in the field) work year-round
  • Occasional travel required for joint work with USDA-ARS, Tifton
  • Working in laboratory dealing with chemicals

Physical requirements:

  • Lifting and carrying up to 60 pounds
  • Standing for extended periods of time; stooping and bending
  • Working in a dusty environment during field operations
  • Operating and driving University/state vehicles (car/van)
