Research Scientist – Food Microbiology

Job Summary:  The Research Scientist- Food Microbiology will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a food microbiology/safety research program in milk and meat products.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform food microbiology/safety research in milk and meat products
  • Write external research grant proposals to support research programs
  • Develop novel, cost-effective techniques to identify and destroy pathogens in food
  • Engage in professional development activities
  • Serve on departmental, college, and institution-level committees
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum:

  • PhD in Food Microbiology, Microbiology, or a Food Safety related field with emphasis on food microbiology and/or food biotechnology; ABD will be considered
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of statistical computing software
  • Familiarity with food safety regulations
  • Familiarity with all food pathogens and their elimination
  • Familiarity with food sanitation, food processing and preservation techniques
  • Familiarity with production of dairy and meat products for human consumption and recent microbiological and biotechnological research techniques are required
  • Demonstrated excellence in research publications and other scholarly activities are desired

Preferred:

  • Post-doctoral research experience

Working Conditions:

  • Traditional work schedule – Monday through Friday; 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • May be required to work beyond regular work hours (evenings and/or weekends) as defined by the needs of the department
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Majority of work is in a climate-controlled environment; some work may be outdoors
  • Travel to attend meetings, conferences, trainings, etc.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear; lift and/or move up to 20 pounds
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Specific vision abilities required include close, distant and color visions, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate
