Tribute to Capt. Hayes Clayton Jr.

Captain Hayes Clayton Jr., a 2002 FVSU graduate from Marietta, GA, died December 25, 2006 while on duty in Balad, Iraq. CPT Clayton was commissioned into the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant in 2002. CPT Clayton earned a bachelor's degree in political science at FVSU and was a member of the ROTC program. He was a loyal brother of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

LTC(R) Gregory K. Rooks was the Professor of Military Science when Clayton was in the ROTC Program. LTC Rooks recalls CPT Clayton's participation as a member of the Ranger Challenge Team. "The team often competes against much larger universities, but Clayton was a leader among his teammates." "He encouraged them and they encouraged him." Most often with him, it wasn't about himself, it was about what he could do for others."

"He was a beacon of light for all of us," said LTC Antonio Foster, Professor of Military Science. "He left behind a legacy that his son can and will be very proud of."

CPT Hayes Clayton Jr., a Christian, a Soldier, a son, a brother, a husband and a father, leaves to cherish and celebrate loving memories is his loving wife, Lieutenant Monica Clayton and his son, Hayes Clayton III; his father and mother, Pastor Hayes and Marlena Clayton; two brothers, Eric (Sherrie) Clayton and Michael (Adonna) Clayton, both of Fairburn, Georgia and one sister, LaToya (Xavier) Robinson of Memphis, Tennessee; two grandmothers, Ms. Ida Mae Clayton and Ms. Vera Cooper, both of Memphis, Tennessee; two nieces and two nephews, four uncles and a host of relatives, loving friends and his beloved church family, Souls for Christ COGIC and Fellowship Temple Church of God in Christ.

In memory of CPT Hayes Clayton, Jr., the FVSU ROTC has established an account to pay for the education of his son, Hayes Clayton III, who is 6 months old.
