FVSU opens doors to hurricane-affected students; organizes donation drive

Thursday, October 6, 2016 Fort Valley State University will provide emergency shelter over the next few days to students from Savannah State University.

FVSU President Dr. Paul Jones said about 200 students who are being displaced due to Hurricane Matthew will be temporarily housed at the Health and Physical Education Complex from this evening until Sunday.

“We know the campus community will welcome students from our sister institution with open arms and show them our Wildcat hospitality during this disaster relief effort,” Jones said of the evacuees, which include some key Savannah State personnel. “During times like these, we are one family.”

SSU classes have been canceled until Monday, October 10.

Savannah State’s relocation to FVSU is part of an existing emergency management agreement that includes providing evacuated students with lodging, dining services and other amenities, such as free wireless internet and extracurricular activities, said Ken Morgan, chief of FVSU’s Department of Campus Police and Safety and chair of the emergency management team.

Fort Valley State University’s Division of External Affairs also is spearheading an effort to solicit additional snacks and beverages for the impacted Savannah State students.

“We are aware that various employees and student organizations are interested in helping these students through donations and other outreach and we want to support those efforts,” said Chanta Haywood, vice president external affairs.

FVSU employees are encouraged to bring donated goods to the HPE Complex beginning Friday, Oct. 7 at 8 a.m. FVSU’s Office of Student Health and Counseling Services also is providing donated snacks, clothing and personal hygiene products.

Students seeking assistance are urged to contact Fort Valley State University at or (478) 825-4264.

During business hours, those calls related to FVSU will be directed to the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Management’s vice president or dean of students.
