Calandra Wright is an educator, journalist, and motivational speaker whose passion is empowering people to live their best professional and personal lives. As Director of Admissions and Recruitment at Fort Valley State University she works to propel students towards reaching their academic, social, and career goals. Embracing the core values of integrity and excellence, her number one initiative at FVSU is increasing enrollment by developing relationships, targeting high achieving students, and offering excellent customer service. Ms. Wright began her career in television news in 1998 as weekend news anchor/reporter at the Fox affiliate in Macon, Georgia. She worked as morning news anchor and account executive at the ABC affiliate before becoming the morning and noon news anchor at 13WMAZ, the CBS affiliate. As a professional speaker, she traveled around the country presenting keynote speeches to fortune 500 companies including SPRINT, Lucent Technologies, and Merck Pharmaceuticals. In 2006 Ms. Wright left the news anchor desk to start a second career in education. She spent a year teaching broadcast writing, broadcast performance, diction, and oral communication at Pensacola Christian College in Florida and served as a broadcaster on the campus radio station. Ms. Wright moved to Atlanta in 2007 to serve as lead high school teacher and senior advisor at Solid Rock Academy where she was named the 2009-2010 Teacher of the Year. Ms. Wright brought her students to three FVSU Open Houses and caught the Wildcat spirit. In October of 2011 she joined the Office of Admissions and Recruitment.
Ms. Wright earned a Master’s degree in School Counselor Education at Fort Valley State University where she conducted research to find ways to help high school students improve their scores on standardized tests. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Georgia State University. She is a member of the American School Counselor Association, the National Association for College Admissions Counseling, the National Association of International Educators, the Regents Administrative Committee on Records and Admission, and Toastmaster’s International. Ms. Wright is a 2003 graduate of Leadership Macon and has volunteered throughout the community reading books to children, calling spelling bees, judging and hosting numerous beauty pageants, and speaking at high school graduations. She has served on the boards of Goodwill Industries and Hospice of Central Georgia.
Born in Dublin, Georgia and raised in a Military family, Ms. Wright lived in Kentucky, Virginia, Hawaii, and Frankfort, Germany before returning to Georgia in her teen years. She is a lifelong learner and is passionate about making sure students take advantage of higher education opportunities.
