Dr. Romelda Simmons is a highly energetic educator with a passion for helping students make the connections, develop the competencies, and display the professionalism needed to reach their goals. The director of the Office of Career Services at Fort Valley State University (FVSU), Simmons has worked for almost three decades in higher education. As director, she oversees student career counseling, exploration, planning, and placement services for permanent jobs and internships, in addition to graduate school opportunities. She has worked to integrate enhanced software and technology into the career engagement process and in the Career Resource Lab, and also works directly with students in professional development by planning and conducting workshops on job search strategies, scheduling on-campus and mock interviews with employers and graduate schools, and organizing recruitment fairs. In addition to career service leadership, Dr. Simmons is also instrumental in new student orientation activities.

She also engages in career awareness outreach to middle and high school youth in the area. She is an active member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), Georgia Association of Colleges and Employers (GACE), and the Georgia Careers Consortium.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Simmons served as director of the FVSU Career Development Center, as interim director of the Counseling and Career Development Center, and as a career counselor. She has been a member of the Commencement Exercises Committee where she has chaired the Marshals Subcommittee, the Honors Convocation Committee where she has chaired the Facilities Subcommittee, the Greek Life Advisory Council, Homecoming Committee, Registration Committee, Customer Service Committee, and Staff Council. Before coming to FVSU, she was a staff counselor in Lane College’s Human Development Center.

Dr. Simmons earned a Doctor of Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) degree with a concentration in higher education administration and an Education Specialist in Educational Leadership degree (Ed.S.) from Argosy University, a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in guidance and counseling from Delta State University, and a bachelor of arts degree (B.A.) in psychology from Fisk University . She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
