Summer break to feature FVSU camps

May 23, 2013 – When Middle Georgia students return to school this fall, some will have great stories to share with their friends thanks to memories made at several, exciting camps on Fort Valley State University’s campus. This summer, the university has activities to keep young minds entertained, engaged and motivated. FVSU’s popular, ten-week camp—available to first- through eighth-grade students—is Summer Kids University. SKU operates from May 28 to August 2 at FVSU’s Warner Robins Center, located at 151 Osigian Blvd. in Warner Robins, Ga. The camp helps students develop athletic, academic and social skills and includes a varied curriculum in science, technology, English, language arts and mathematics. “There is a great need for continual learning in the summer time,” said Malika Moore, SKU coordinator. “FVSU parents are very excited about our unique program, which is designed not only to enhance and sharpen academic skills, but to help kids stay active and encourage them to be more sociable. Overseen by FVSU’s College of Graduate Studies and Extended Education, the camp is in its fifth year. According to Dr. Anna Holloway, Summer Kids University is a group effort from the FVSU Family. “What I think is great is that students and faculty from several areas of our university are volunteering and participating to make Summer Kids [University] possible,” said Holloway, dean of graduate studies and extended education. “Also, the children have plenty of fun!” Students can take courses to become fluent in languages such as Spanish and French, craft imaginative fiction in creative writing labs, or learn the art of equestrian training during horseback riding lessons. Students can also take technology courses to sharpen their computer skills. The camp offers military discounts and before and after care.
