Message from the Dean

The faculty, staff, and students in the College of Arts and Science at Fort Valley State University (FVSU) join me in extending a warm welcome to you.

Dean Fares Howari

A center of intellectual exploration, scientific advancement, and artistic expression, the College of Arts and Sciences produces highly successful professionals. We adhere to rigorous, international standards of academic excellence in preparing graduates for successful careers and leadership roles.

Our faculty and staff endeavor to develop students holistically. Students learn in state-of-the-art classrooms and interact with professors individually, as role models, and/or as mentors. The faculty work diligently to ensure that students acquire the knowledge, skills, and leadership experiences essential for successful careers and effective 21st-century citizenship. We also aspire to produce graduates who are intellectually curious and have the capacity for lifelong learning.

In addition, to high-quality degree offerings, the College offers research and service opportunities. Students acquire research and publication experiences, working in tandem with faculty researchers. Our faculty receive federal, state, or local funding to conduct academic research projects and/or outreach projects in response to program-related needs of the local community, national and regional governments, and industrial sectors.

Among the significant state partnerships in which our students enjoy service and internship opportunities are the Sheryl Underwood Radio, iHeart Radio Macon, the Grand Opera House, the Tubman Museum, and the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services. Memoranda of Understanding exist with Robins Air Force Base, the largest employer in the state, Central Georgia Technical College, and Georgia Military College. In short, the College is committed to supporting the well-being of the region and beyond and advancing research and service-learning opportunities for students pursuant to the FVSU mission.

For more than 15 years, the College has hosted the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program. The program works to increase the number of STEM baccalaureate and graduate degrees awarded to populations who have historically been underrepresented in these disciplines. Additionally, FVSU Mathematics faculty and students play an important role each year in supporting the Cooperative Developmental Energy Program’s Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Academy (CDEP-MSEA) pre-college outreach program. As our society continues to become borderless, students will need to be able to compete and succeed in a global economy. To do so, FVSU students have the opportunity to study abroad during college matriculation.  FVSU study abroad experiences enhance students’ cross-cultural communication skills, expand students’ personal and professional networks, and increase students’ capacity to embrace new cultures and environments.

The College of Arts and Sciences is a multidisciplinary academic unit offering baccalaureate degrees in the natural, physical, and social sciences, creative arts, and humanities. The College consists of five academic departments; these departments offer majors in Behavioral Sciences; Biology; Business Administration and Economics; Chemistry; Visual and Performing Arts and Media Studies; Political Science and Criminal Justice; Media Studies, Mathematics, and Computer Science. I encourage you to visit each department page to further explore the majors and minors we offer, their degree plans, and carrier options.

The College also houses the Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP), which has garnered national acclaim for innovation in increasing the number of minorities and women working in the private and public sectors of the energy industry. Students might also enroll in the University System of Georgia’s Ecore program offering a range of general education core courses.  Our degree programs are structured to provide students with the best possible preparation for 21st– century careers. A degree from FVSU’s College of Arts and Sciences will help you stand out from the crowd and ensure that you are well-prepared for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

There’s never been a more exciting time to join FVSU. Across FVSU, our dedicated faculty and staff will ensure that your academic journey and student life are the most enjoyable that they can be.

Thank you for your interest in our College. I invite you to join a team dedicated to advancing your academic and professional career. Please email us, call us, connect with us on social media, or visit us on our beautiful campus, where you will be warmly welcomed!
