What is Outreach and Engagement?

Equestrian ClubOutreach/engagement is a meaningful and mutually beneficial partnership between education, business, public and social service. It extends the intellectual expertise and resources that encourage lifelong learning by reaching beyond the campus gates through education, partnerships, and applied research. Outreach/engagement provides research that makes our discoveries useful beyond the academic community, and provides services to address our social, civic, economic development, and environmental issues and opportunities

The Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP)

The Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP) was established in 1969 by the National Urban League for the purpose of bridging the gap between the classroom and the workplace. BEEP’s mission is to “share learning and experience across generations, cultivate new leaders and inspire achievements beyond the impossible through committed involvement and operational excellence.” Each year, African American managers employed by major corporations visit the Fort Valley State University campus for two days giving lectures, mentoring students, and serving as role models.

C. W. Pettigrew Farm and Community Life Center

This center serves the conference and convention needs of the area as well as the campus. Facility services are provided for all types of organizations for their educational, cultural, civic, and public service needs. Camp Adventure

This provides an opportunity for college students to broaden their service learning horizons through working overseas with youth programs while earning college credit during the summer. Internships and student teaching opportunities are also available. For more information, call 478.825.6613.

Career Development Center

The Career Development Center provides a variety of career services designed to assist students in analyzing interests, aptitudes, personal traits, desired lifestyles, and educational and career goals. Students receive career and employment information so that they may understand the implications of their choice of program/major. The Career Development Center also assists students in obtaining employment commensurate with their academic preparation, interests, capabilities, and career and life goals. Center for Biotechnology

The Center for Biotechnology housed on the campus of Fort Valley State University facilitates programs such as The National Science Foundation’s HBCU-UP, REU-Site Program and the United States Department of Agriculture’s 1890 Capacity Building Program. The Center is primarily focused on enhancing education in the SMET (Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology) disciplines. The Center for Biotechnology is currently offering scholarships to more than 40 recipients through externally funded federal grants. In addition, the center offers several student enrichment programs such as: Research Experiences for Undergraduates, programs during the summer/academic year and a pre-college program, Summer Research Apprenticeship Program for High School Students. Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP)

This innovative energy education program focuses on increasing the number of minorities and women working in the private and governmental sectors of the energy industry. CDEP has formed alliances with energy companies and government agencies to provide internships, financial support or a combination of both. For more information, call 478.825.6246.

FVSU Foundation

The Foundation serves as a private, not-for-profit vehicle to encourage, solicit, receive and administer gifts and bequests of property and funds for scientific, educational and charitable purposes. The Foundation’s Board of Directors includes members of the local community as well as others. For more information, call 478.825.6474.

Garden College

This is a collaborative effort between the Extended Education Outreach Program, the College of Agriculture, Consumer Science and Allied Programs and the Houston County Extension Office. Non-credit classes are provided once a month to teach individuals about plant science, horticulture, and basic gardening. For more information, call 478.825.6884.

Head Start Program

Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that serves children from birth to age five, pregnant women, and their families. It is a child-focused program and has the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low-income families. For more information, call 478.825.6171.

The Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation

The Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation is a collaborative effort sustained by a coalition of six colleges and universities in Georgia to significantly increase the number of underrepresented minority students statewide who complete undergraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This is accomplished through a comprehensive, integrated series of recruitment and retention initiatives that address key transition points from undergraduate recruitment through preparation for graduate school. The National Science Foundation funds the alliance. PSLSAMP offers stipends, travel, tutoring and other benefits to more than 40 students each semester. For more information, call 478-825-6841.

Public Service Center

The Fort Valley State University Public Service Center operates as a socio-economic development engine for middle Georgia and surrounding counties. It currently houses five core programs:
