Summer camp at Fort Valley State University is not viewed as your traditional experience by many. Instead of camp fires and pitching tents, students ages 10-13 learn about opportunities available in STEAM - science, technology, engineering, agriculture and mathematics – fields.

The 4-H STEAM Summer Day Camp, held from June 4-15, drew in more than 90 students who participated in horseback riding and gardening sessions. Students also toured FVSU's campus and visited stations where they met with experts in areas of engineering, agriculture and veterinary science.

"I learned how they remove the horns from goats when they are babies so they won't injure somebody or other goats," said Hillary Fobbs, a rising eighth grader from Peach County. This Fort Valley Middle School student said she's now considering a career in the field of veterinary science.

In addition to campus activities, camp participants visited Lane Packing in Fort Valley, the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins and Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta.
