JIMMY McCAMEY, PH.D.


Dr. McCamey has over 20 years’ experience in higher education, clinical social work practice, mental health counseling services, education consultation, assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, adults and families. Additionally, Dr. McCamey has over two decades of leadership and management experience in higher education, residential treatment, psychiatric and community base treatment facilities and nonprofit organizations. In addition to providing mental health counseling and supervision for master level clinicians, Dr. McCamey has taught undergraduate and graduate social work, psychology, sociology and clinical mental health counseling courses for over fifteen years.
Dr. McCamey is a former faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) where he is credited as being one of the founding faculty member of the Master of Social Work Program. This is noteworthy, because this particular Master of Social Work Program is one of a kind in the country that teaches master level social work students clinical social work practice from a strength base and solution focus approach to treatment and mental health services.
Dr. McCamey is former chair of the Behavioral Science Department at Fort Valley State University. In the role as Chair, in which he served for over 5 years, Dr. McCamey managed three undergraduate programs in social work, psychology and sociology and two graduate programs in clinical mental health counseling and rehabilitation counseling. Dr. McCamey was responsible for managing Doctoral level social scientist and faculty from a variety of disciplines that were housed in the Department of Behavioral Sciences.
Presently, Dr. McCamey is a tenured Associate Professor of Social Work. Dr. McCamey has published extensively in the area of mental health, poverty, social welfare, academic achievement, and African-American Men and Women issues, Race, Class and Gender, to name a few. Dr. McCamey has written three books which were released in November of 2016: The books are as follows: 1) A Guide to Working with Adolescent Sexual Abusers in Residential Treatment Settings, 2) The Ties that Binds Us; Recapturing the African-American Community from Inside Out, and 3) The Pathology of Racism. Lastly, Dr. McCamey has a fourth book, forthcoming titled, A Guide to Working with African-American Mental Health; Reducing the Stigma of Mental Health Counseling in the African-American Community. Dr. McCamey has served on countless number of boards and nonprofit organizations in several states. His research publications have appeared in both national and international journals.
Dr. McCamey has an earned bachelor of social work degree from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), master of counseling degree from Troy University (TSU), master of social work degree (MSW) and doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from the Whitney M. Young School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University (CAU).
Dr. McCamey is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Diplomat in Clinical Social Work-all by Examination (DCSW). He is also state certified (GA) as a DUI Clinical Evaluator, DUI Treatment Provider, and DUI & Driver Improvement School Director/Owner/Instructor. He is certified for PRIME for Life (PRI-Version 9), PRIME Solutions (Version 1.0-ASAM Substance Abuse Treatment) and Driving Educators of Georgia (D.E.O.G.) Dr. McCamey is a long standing member of the National Association of Social Work (NAWS) were he served most recently as Chair of the Georgia’s Legislative committee, which he was nominated and selected by his peers based on his clinical practice, research, scholarship and community services.
