July 25, 2012 – Late July is when Fort Valley State University students prepare for their trek back to campus. Upperclassmen dutifully wrap up their academic internships and summer jobs, while incoming freshmen pack up their bags in anticipation for their first day at college.
As the academic year begins, FVSU employees are busy, getting ready for new and current students’ arrival. Administrators, faculty and staff will take a professional workshop to learn the best standards and practices during the annual Faculty and Staff Institute at 8:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 6 in the C.W. Pettigrew Center. The 2012 theme is, “Who We Are…Why We Are Here.” This year’s facilitators will be Drs. Julius Scipio, vice president of academic affairs, and Melody Carter, vice president of external affairs and executive director of the FVSU Foundation, Inc.
“The primary purpose of the institute is to promote collaboration, establish and strengthen partnerships among faculty, staff, administrators and students,” said JuoneBrown, who serves as the committee chair. “I believe that this year’s institute is going to help us reaffirm and clearly identify who we are as an institution, where we are, and how we can accomplish our goal.”
Brown says that, unlike the past, each vice president will not make 15-minute PowerPoint presentation. Instead, vice presidents will deliver short, five-minute reports that will focus on unit accomplishments, future goals and means of assessing progress.
Following the reports, attendees will discuss the state of FVSU with a five-person panel featuring Fred Hammond, Student Government Association president; Dr. Julius Scipio; Willie Williams, vice president for student affairs; Henry Spinks, interim vice president for business and finance; and Dr. Melody Carter.
“This process was developed by the Faculty and Staff Institute committee as a means of providing more interaction during the institute than in years past,” said Brown.
