Fort Valley State University Men’s Volleyball Team Makes History as First HBCU to Compete in NCAA Division I Championship

Fort Valley, GA - April 24, 2024 - Fort Valley State University (FVSU) proudly announces that its Men’s Volleyball Team has secured a historic spot as the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to compete in the 2024 NCAA Division I Championship.

This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone in collegiate athletics, showcasing the talent and determination of FVSU’s athletes on a national stage.
President Paul Jones of Fort Valley State University expressed his excitement about this momentous occasion, stating, “The FVSU Men’s Volleyball Team’s advancement to the NCAA Championship is a testament to their hard work and dedication. We are immensely proud of their accomplishments and thrilled to see them represent FVSU and HBCUs on the national stage.”

FVSU’s journey to the NCAA NC Championship has been generously sponsored by Donovan Mitchell’s Foundation SPIDACARES, whose support has made this historic trip possible. With their backing, the Wildcats are set to face off against No. 1 seed Bruins of UCLA on April 30 in Long Beach, California.

Interim Vice President of Advancement Karen Wright also shared her gratitude, saying, "The generous donation from Donovan Mitchell Foundation SPIDACARES is a true reflection of their commitment to empowering young athletes and supporting initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion in collegiate athletics. We are incredibly grateful for their partnership and the opportunities they are bringing to our student-athletes.”

The Wildcats’ remarkable journey to the NCAA Championship includes an impressive 10-0 record in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and a season record of 17-8, doubling their combined program victories from their first two seasons. 

Interim Director of Athletics Daphnie Johnson added, “The FVSU Men’s Volleyball Team’s historic journey to the NCAA Championship is a testament to their skill, perseverance, and teamwork. We are proud to support Coach Larry Wrather and this remarkable team as they make history and represent Fort Valley State University with pride and excellence.”

Their breakthrough campaign has captured the attention of volleyball enthusiasts nationwide, highlighting FVSU’s commitment to excellence both on and off the court.
