U.S. Department of Agriculture administrator to visit Fort Valley State University

May 21, 2015 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Assistant Secretary of Administration, Dr. Gregory Parham, will be on campus May 28- 29 to speak during two meetings that aim to improve conditions for Georgians.

On Thursday, May 28, Parham is scheduled to address participants at the USDA Georgia Strikeforce Initiative meeting.

The USDA Georgia Strikeforce Initiative is a program that aims to increase resources in rural communities by providing technical assistance to Georgia’s 60 Strikeforce counties, or counties with consistent poverty. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the Agricultural Technology Conference Center located at 41 Camp John Hope Road in Fort Valley. Admission is free and open to the public.

Some of the topics of discussion include the conditions of rural poverty, impacts on the Strikeforce Initiative and additional local, state and federal programs and resources. He also plans to make several key announcements, including a marketing grant, conservation compliance deadline and high priority natural resources assistance during the visit.

In addition to the Strikeforce meeting, Parham is the opening session speaker for the spring conference of the Georgia Conference of Black Mayors (GCBM) Inc. GCBM Inc. is a non-profit organization that disseminates information and identifies resources for mayors in rural areas throughout the state. The conference begins at noon May 29 at the C.W. Pettigrew Farm and Community Life Center on FVSU’s campus and ends Sunday May 31. Registration information is available at http://gcbm.us/.

Some topics of discussion may include funding for value added products, community development and sustainable partnerships.

Furthermore, Parham will also meet with FVSU leadership, faculty, staff and students as well as tour the campus agriculture facilities on May 28 and 29.
