August 25, 2010 - Antwan “Big Boi” Patton, a member of the Grammy award-winning hip-hop duo, Outkast, will give FVSU students an insider’s perspective on success and how to explore creative options during the John W. Davison Lecture Series Wednesday, August 25 at 6 p.m. in the Pettigrew Center.

J.D.U.: Steve Harvey¹s twins create buzz at freshman orientation

August 18, 2010 - This week, “Just Do You” features an interview with the founders of a young women’s empowerment series called, “Young, Fit and Fly”. The twin daughters of comedian and syndicated radio host Steve Harvey were guest speakers during freshmen orientation at Fort Valley State University. Karli and Brandi Harvey joined Patrice Cunningham Washington to tackle topics students face, such as taking responsibility for their careers, image, finances, health and wellness.

FVSU staffer on ABC World News Tonight

August 11,2010 - Shonda Lewis, Fort Valley State University’s marketing coordinator, appeared on national television this week. She pitched her family’s experience with “precocious puberty” not knowing the response would land an interview with NY producers via Skype. An Atlanta tv crew rushed to FVSU to capture the story but arrived too late. The interview was included in a news package on “ABC World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer” Monday, Aug. 9.

Campers return to FVSU for life lessons

July 28, 2010 - Some people living in an urban environment know little about life in a rural setting. But now, 600 campers, participants of the Southeastern Youth for Christ conference can say they’ve tasted a bit of farm life for the first time at Fort Valley State University. Students ages 8 to 24 travelled from as faraway as Texas and Arkansas to attend the 33rd Anniversary Youth for Christ Camp July 19-24. The event attracted the largest campus gathering of the summer.

July 14, 2010 - Three Fort Valley State University employees in the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management obtained advanced degrees recently.

Christina Smalls, director of counseling services received a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Walden University. “When I attended Bowie State University it was suggested that there was a need for more black psychologists because so many young African-Americans were seeking counseling services. I hadn’t planned to go on for a doctorate, but when I heard that statement, I decided to get the Ph.D.”

FVSU’s Economic Impact in Middle Georgia

July 14, 2010 - Fort Valley State University is the engine that drives economic growth in the Middle Georgia region. A recent report released by the University System of Georgia reflects FVSU’s contribution to the local economy. According to the study, FVSU provides 1,535 jobs and more than $100 million in spending.

Young Chef Brings Low Country Cuisine with a Twist to FVSU

Chef Justin Gillette is cooking up something special.

July 6, 2010 - Some entrees that appear occasionally on FVSU’s cafeteria menu resemble items served in the world’s best fine dining restaurants such as the Four Seasons, the Ritz Carlton or J.W. Marriott. Sodexo chef Justin Gillette recently served ostrich during a special promotion called “Funky Friday’s”. The program began in January to tickle the taste palettes of students and faculty and nudge them to try unique, out of the ordinary dishes.

Fort Valley mayor maps strategy to address FVSU's growth

June 23, 2010 - Fort Valley residents are keeping a watchful eye on the university campus that sits in the southeastern corner of the small town known for its peaches and pecans. With each semester since 2006 comes an increase in student enrollment. The growth is apparent as residents drive past new construction projects such as the new Science Academic Building. A question persists in the minds of some residents who make up the population of 8,600. Can the city’s infrastructure accommodate more growth at FVSU and for how long before it impacts services?

June 16 - If someone stumbled into the Anna L. Lumpkin Auditorium June 11, they may have mistaken the Fort Valley gathering to be of solemn purpose. The community honored a local legend much like the way family and friends do when someone dies, but the man recognized is very much alive.

June 2, 2010 - During summer’s sultriest days, Middle Georgia socialites, alums and supporters throughout the state like to make a splash at Fort Valley State University’s swankiest scholarship fundraisers: the Tea at Noon in June. Tony men in dapper suits escort their fashionistas decked in posh designer hats and flirty summer dresses. The high noon soiree at the C. W. Pettigrew Center on June 12 will be hosted by First Lady Betty Rivers. Proceeds raised are earmarked for the Camellia Scholarship Fund.

June 1, 2010 - The Fort Valley State University family knows Development Associate Alecia Livatt is a straight-shooting, fun-loving, hard-working, go-to professional known for accepting projects outside of assigned tasks. This month, Livatt’s work ethic, Wildcat spirit and community work earned the top prize for excellence in customer service. She is June’s employee of the month.

Livatt was nominated by Joy Moten-Thomas, director of the Public Service Center, and Denise Eady, the university’s National Science Foundation compliance officer.

May 18, 2010 - Fort Valley State University’s employee of the month is sporting a sparkly clean Toyota Avalon. Malinda Nicholson is the recipient of a free car wash, compliments of the university’s marketing and communications office and several members of the recognition program’s selection committee. Before summer’s sizzling temperatures intensified, the detail crew got to work filling buckets with water and cleaning solution.

May 18, 2010 - For Virginia Gramling, the pottery wheel is a sanctuary. This month, the work and artistry of the Middle Georgia sculptor is on display at Fort Valley State University’s C. W. Pettigrew Farm and Community Life Center.

Gramling uses the wheel-throwing process to craft works of art. Clay is literally thrown onto the center of a pottery wheel and shaped into a structure.
