Energy company donates $5,000 to FVSU

A major energy company in the state is investing in the future of Fort Valley State University wildcats. Recently, Flint Energies donated $5,000 from its corporate community investment fund to the FVSU Foundation. The money is earmarked for scholarships and will help academically-talented students in Bibb, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Dooly, Harris, Houston, Macon, Marion, Monroe, Muscogee, Peach, Schley, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Twiggs and Upson counties.

FVSU leads students on paths to medical professions

Christian Felton, a junior at Southland Academy in Americus wants to be a pediatrician. Aspiring pharmacist Kristen Dixon is focused on finding new cures for diseases like diabetes, lupus and cancer. Delivering healthy babies is the passion of Le Gregis Prunell, who plans to pursue a career in obstetrics and gynecology. Fort Valley State University is shining a light on the paths of 25 aspiring young health professionals like Christian, Kristen and Le Gregis.

Peach County received grade on minority health

Peach County’s minority residents receive marginal treatment for health issues such as HIV, diabetes and cancer. Those are the findings of a report released at Fort Valley State University by the Georgia Department of Community Health, Minority Health Advisory Council and Office of Health Improvement. Health care services received by African American and Hispanic residents fall short of the care received by whites, states the OHI’s Health Disparities Report 2008.

FVSU holds summer arts camp

Sunday, June 8 marked the start of Fort Valley State University’s fourth annual Fine Arts Media Experience (FAME) camp. The camp, which runs through June 20, is an outreach project started by the university’s Fine Arts department to sharpen middle and high school students’ artistic skills, and recruit students interested in the arts.

FVSU hosts state meeting on minority health disparities

In the documentary movie “Sicko,” filmmaker Michael Moore explores the glaring inequities of access to healthcare in America. On Wednesday, June 11, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the C. W. Pettigrew Center, Fort Valley State University will host a community conversation about this timely issue when the Office of Health Improvement presents its 2008 Georgia Health Disparities Report. The study was developed by the Georgia Department of Community Health, Office of Health Improvement and the Minority Health Advisory Council. FVSU is one of ten statewide meeting sites.

Fort Valley State offering free senior program

Some baby boomers barely keep up with the newest technology and latest dietary trends, so imagine how their parents are doing.

To keep the older generation up-to-date, Fort Valley State University is offering a free senior enrichment program, May 29, at its C.W. Pettigrew Farm and Community Life Center. The event, which begins at 10 a.m., is also open to caregivers and professional educators who work with the elderly.

During the five-hour workshop, presenters will cover several topics including cell phone usage, practicing healthy eating habits and gardening.

FVSU Adopts Bibb County Middle School

Against the backdrop of a postcard perfect day in the square where the Wildcat reins supreme, 100 Ballard Hudson Middle School students watched history in the making. The tweens applauded as Fort Valley State University President Larry E. Rivers signed a poster-sized agreement finalizing the adoption of their school. Administrators from both schools witnessed the signing that will enable BHMS students to receive mentoring at the university and prepare them for college. If the ‘cat could talk, he would’ve roared with approval.

Keeping up with ever changing computer technology trends is a daunting task for most of us. But 18 Peach County citizens with a desire to be tech savvy weren’t about to be intimidated. The eager students at the Fort Valley Senior Center participated in a free, nine-week computer training course created by Literacy Education for Adults in Peach County (L.E.A.P.). Rain in the forecast didn’t dampen the spirits at Fort Valley State University’s second annual Wheels In The Valley Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show on Saturday. More than 100 vehicle owners shined their chrome and buffed their bumpers for the chance to take home an award. Families came out and enjoyed the food vendors and inflatable games and schoolchildren entertained the crowd with a jump-rope and cheerleading show. From classic Fords and Chevrolets to late-model Pontiacs and Dodges, there were plenty of wheels to see in The Valley!
