A day before President-Elect Barack Obama places his hand on Lincoln’s Bible and takes the oath of office to become the nation’s first black president and leader of the free world, America will celebrate the civil rights leader whose vision made his rise to the office possible: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, Fort Valley State University will hold a King Memorial Day March starting at the Wildcat Commons Clubhouse. The event is sponsored by FVSU’s Office of Campus Life and First Year Experience, the Student Government Association, Fort Valley’s Ministerial Alliance, the Peach County Branch of the NAACP and the Fort Valley Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
“We encourage the entire FVSU family to support this worthy, annual communiversity event,” said Wallace Keese, director of student support services. “Everyone is invited to march; the entire FVSU family and the Middle Georgia community.”
The march will end with a memorial service, led by Pastor Cedric Allen, in honor of King at Usher’s Temple CME Church in Fort Valley. Free transportation for marchers’ return to campus will be provided when the service ends.
