Welcome from the Dean
I am delighted to serve each of you. It is indeed my intent to make your transition to the collegiate environment pleasurable, eliminating as much stress as possible. It is very important that you understand the purpose of University College at FVSU.
Upon entering the university each new freshman will be assigned an academic advisor and/or retention specialist to guide you through the registration process and assists you academically during your first two years at FVSU. You will be required to visit with your assigned academic advisor and/or retention specialist frequently through each semester of your freshman and sophomore years.
At the conclusion of the sophomore year, you will be required to take the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) Test. Once taken, and successfully completed, you will then be assigned to an academic advisor from your chosen academic major department. Students admitted to the University College must meet all requirements as outlined upon enrollment before exiting, and progressing toward the junior year.
It is important that you remember that your academic success at FVSU is not only our responsibility, but you as the student, must take a concerted effort to ensure that you are progressing satisfactorily toward graduation in four years. The faculty and staff of the University College, along with myself, look forward to working with you to make Fort Valley State University the starting point of a lifetime of fulfillment.
Yours in Academic Success,
Stevie L. Lawrence II, Ph.D.
