Posted on Oct 05, 2016

Fort Valley State University student Gary Earl Johnson Jr. has died in a single-vehicle accident at 12:21 a.m. today (October 5) in Warner Robins, Ga. Details of the accident are still being investigated by the Warner Robins Police.

Johnson, a liberal studies senior from Columbus, Ga., was scheduled to graduate in December 2016. The former Blue Machine Marching Band drum major was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity.

Dr. Donta Truss, vice provost for the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Management, called Johnson's death tragic, adding "Our campus community is mourning the loss of this dynamic, young man. The loss is resonating across campus and has left our student body dismayed. At FVSU, we deeply feel every loss such as this because we are such a tight knit family. We have sent our condolences to the family and will be reaching out to inquire about how we can assist further."

Johnson and his wife have one son and are expecting another child in December.

A student-led candlelight vigil is scheduled tonight at 8 p.m., near Patton Hall. FVSU's Office of Student Health and Counseling Services will provide emotional care and comfort to attendees.

Details on funeral arrangements and/or memorial services are still pending.
