From Foster Care to Changemaker: Jacob Pearson’s Journey of Purpose and Power
Posted on May 07, 2025 at 10:08 AM
From surviving the foster care system to preparing for graduate school and launching a nonprofit, Jacob Pearson’s journey is extraordinary. A native of Lithia Springs, Georgia, Jacob will graduate from Fort Valley State University this spring with a Bachelor of Social Work. This milestone represents both triumph and transformation.
“I chose social work because I lived through the very challenges I now aspire to help others overcome,” Jacob shares. “As a child in the foster care system, I endured abuse, neglect, and deep emotional hardship. My experience fuels my passion for advocating on behalf of vulnerable youth.”
That passion has become purpose. After graduation, Jacob is heading to Alabama A&M University to pursue his Master of Social Work. At the same time, he will be launching Bridging the Gap Coaching, a business focused on equipping young people with the tools to succeed academically, emotionally and personally. His ultimate dream is to establish Jacob’s House, a nonprofit sanctuary for abused and neglected youth that fosters healing through education and the arts.
“Commencement will be a full-circle moment,” Jacob says. “It marks the end of a difficult but transformative journey and the beginning of a mission I’ve long prepared for.” He will be honoring the memory of his birth mother, who passed away in October 2024, and celebrating with his adoptive parents, John and Sharron Pearson, and the extended village that helped him thrive.
Jacob’s time at FVSU has been filled with growth, creativity and recognition. In 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration named him one of Fort Valley State University’s White House HBCU Scholars. This national honor affirmed the power of his voice and vision.
“FVSU gave me more than an education. It gave me confidence, connections and the freedom to be creative and vulnerable,” he reflects. “I’ll especially miss the warmth of my professors and peers who saw potential in me even when I doubted myself.”
A storyteller at heart, Jacob recently wrote and directed his first play at Fort Valley State, blending his love for theater, healing and mentorship. He also coaches track and field and hopes to one day serve communities worldwide through service-learning and cultural exchange.
Jacob is the first and only member of his biological family to graduate from college. He calls this achievement both personal and historic. His advice for others is rooted in resilience.
“Don’t give up even when it gets hard. Your past does not define your future. There is power in your story, and there’s always a purpose behind your pain. Take your education seriously the first time, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
With bold dreams, a compassionate heart and unshakable determination, Jacob Pearson is on a mission to change lives. And he is just getting started.
