Grace in the Storm: The Journey of Sidney B. Lee
Posted on May 08, 2025 at 16:49 PM
Sidney Lee, an Elementary Education / Special Education major, moved from the vibrant city of New Orleans to the quiet fields of Mississippi. Her path to graduation reflects strength, perseverance and the unwavering support of her family and Fort Valley State University (FVSU). It is a story of personal growth, not just survival.
In 2020, as high school seniors across the country faced the loss of traditional celebrations due to the pandemic, Sidney was carrying a much deeper sorrow. The summer before her senior year, she spent precious time with her retired grandparents on their Mississippi farm. Those weeks were filled with stories, early mornings at church, and simple joys like spontaneous snow cone runs. Those moments that left a lasting impression and offered wisdom that would help carry her through great pain.
On July 4, 2019, Sidney’s world changed suddenly. Her grandfather passed away, and despite all efforts to save him, he was gone. The grief was overwhelming and lasting. She and her grandmother were left to navigate life without him. Just weeks later, Sidney bravely decided to return to Georgia and begin her senior year of high school. She left behind not only her grieving grandmother, but also the stability she had found in Mississippi.
Her senior year was one of the most challenging seasons of her life. She worked long hours, kept up with academics and wrestled with fears about the future. College felt out of reach. But then, FVSU entered her life at just the right time. Although beginning college during a global pandemic brought unique challenges, FVSU became her place of comfort and renewal. The support of faculty, a dedicated advisor and caring peers helped her discover a new sense of direction.
Sidney credits the College of Education and Professional Studies at FVSU with helping her find her voice and develop her confidence. Their encouragement was crucial in shaping her into the educator and woman she is today. Faith was also central to her journey. She leaned heavily on her belief in God when fear and depression threatened to derail her goals. Through it all, she pushed forward and is now proud to graduate on time.
Looking ahead, Sidney plans to return home to support her family’s business and eventually enter the classroom. Her goal is to carry forward her grandparents' legacy and give back to the next generation through teaching. She remains deeply thankful to those at FVSU who believed in her and helped her grow into the leader she is today.
