FVSU Alum, Commencement Speaker, and Honorary Doctorate Recipient Pledged $500,000 to Support Student Success

Fort Valley State University is celebrating an extraordinary act of generosity that reflects lifelong loyalty and a deep commitment to the next generation of Wildcats. Robert J. Jones, Ph.D., president of the University of Washington, FVSU Class of 1973 alumnus, Fall 2025 Commencement Speaker and honorary doctorate recipient, pledged a transformative $500,000 gift to FVSU during this year’s commencement celebration.

Jones, who credits FVSU with shaping the foundation of his academic journey and life’s work, shared the news following his commencement address. His pledge marks one of the most significant individual commitments from an alumnus in recent years and comes at a historic moment as the university celebrates 130 years of unapologetic excellence.

“This university poured into me at a critical time in my life,” said Robert Jones, Ph.D. “To be able to give back in a way that supports our students, our future leaders, is a profound honor. My hope is that this gift helps open doors, remove barriers and inspire others to invest in the powerful legacy of Fort Valley State.”

The $500,000 pledge will support scholarships, leadership development and student success initiatives. His commitment also aligns with FVSU’s focus on success, scholarship and sustainability during its 130th anniversary year.

“Dr. Jones represents the very best of FVSU. His career is a testament to what is possible when talent meets opportunity, and his generosity will impact generations of Wildcats to come,” said President Paul Jones, Ph.D.  “We were honored to welcome him home as our commencement speaker and to recognize his outstanding contributions with an honorary doctorate.”
As FVSU celebrated its newest graduates, Jones’ pledge stood as a powerful reminder of the university’s enduring legacy and the remarkable alumni who continue to invest in its future.
