A Legacy of Light: Makeba Dennis Finds Purpose Through Perseverance
Posted on May 07, 2026 at 18:09 PM
Makeba Dennis, administrative assistant to the director of Housing, will graduate this spring with a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Fort Valley State University (FVSU).
Makeba, a native of Crawford County, brings years of experience rooted in service, including 14 years with the Houston County Board of Education and 4 years serving students at FVSU.
Her path to counseling was intentional, though not traditional. After earning a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Phoenix, Makeba built a foundation in effective communication. This emphasis guided her professional journey from education roles toward her long-held goal of family counseling.
Before her current role, Makeba made an impact on students while serving as the administrative assistant in the Office of Outreach and Counseling. In that phase of her career, she often served as a listening ear for students navigating difficult circumstances. She learned that while she could not always provide answers, her presence alone was meaningful.
As a first point of contact for many students, Makeba approaches each interaction with care, knowing that one experience can shape a student’s view of the institution. Her commitment to kindness and connection stems from her understanding of student needs. Many arrive carrying unseen challenges; Makeba works to create an environment where they feel supported, valued and heard. She sees her role as a chance to make a lasting difference.
With the support of Alvin Lindsey, director of Outreach, Makeba began her graduate studies through the University System of Georgia’s Tuition Assistance Program during a challenging season in her life. What began as an academic pursuit soon became something more transformative, preparing her professionally and supporting her personally by providing space for healing and growth when she needed it most.
Her sense of purpose strengthened during her internship with Family Counseling Services of Central Georgia, where she worked with clients through the RISE program and supported individuals navigating complex personal challenges. This experience solidified her desire to remain in the counseling field and pursue licensure as a clinician.
Graduating with a high GPA, Makeba serves as the president of the Zeta Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International. She also serves as the advisor for Every Mind Matters.
Outside work and academics, Makeba prioritizes self-care, knowing that caring for others starts with caring for herself. She finds balance by reading or enjoying peaceful moments with her dog, Jaxson.
As a mother, her journey holds deeper meaning. Her children, Kentarious and Kennedy, constantly encourage her and remind her of her strength, inspiring her to press on even when uncertain.
Now preparing for the next chapter, Makeba hopes to work in private practice, focusing on family counseling and creating spaces where people feel safe to share their stories. Makeba is focused on leaving a legacy of light, hope, and service. She believes in supporting others, especially those who lacked it before, and being the presence she once needed.
At Fort Valley State University, where generations of Wildcats continue to rise and lead, Makeba stands as a powerful example that purpose can be rediscovered at any stage in life, and that, even in difficult seasons, there is always an opportunity to grow, heal, and shine.
