FVSU Earns National Recognition in 2027 U.S. News Rankings, Maintains Top Public HBCU Ranking in Georgia

Fort Valley State University (FVSU) continues to shine as the #1 public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Georgia for the ninth consecutive year, according to the 2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings.

The university also earned national recognition, ranking 11th in Social Mobility and 22nd in Top Public Schools among National Liberal Arts Colleges and 29th among Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the nation.

“Fort Valley State University is proud to be recognized nationally for the work we do to create opportunity and support student success,” said FVSU President Paul Jones, Ph.D. “This recognition reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff and students and our continued commitment to providing an education that opens doors and creates opportunities for generations to come.”

These distinctions come during a significant year of change in the way U.S. News & World Report categorizes colleges and universities for its Best Colleges rankings. For the first time, FVSU is classified as a National Liberal Arts College, moving from the Regional Universities category in the previous rankings.

The change in classification is tied to updates to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, which serves as the foundation for how U.S. News organizes institutions into ranking categories. The updated Carnegie framework resulted in several colleges and universities being placed into different U.S. News ranking categories for the 2027 Best Colleges rankings.

In 2025, FVSU was designated as a Research College and University in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, marking an important milestone in the university’s continued growth in research and innovation. The designation reflects FVSU’s expanding research activity and commitment to creating opportunities for discovery, innovation and student engagement in research.

As a result, the university’s 2027 rankings are being measured against a different national peer group than in previous years. The new classification provides an expanded national context for understanding FVSU’s performance, particularly in the area of social mobility.

Social mobility is an important measure of an institution’s ability to enroll and graduate students who receive federal Pell Grants, a population that typically includes students from lower-income households. The recognition emphasizes FVSU’s role in providing access to higher education and supporting students as they work toward achieving their educational and career goals.

For FVSU, the 2027 rankings provide a new national point of comparison while reinforcing the university’s longstanding commitment to access, student achievement and upward mobility. That commitment reflects one standard: excellence, as Fort Valley State University continues to expand its national visibility and demonstrate its impact as a public, Historically Black Land-Grant University serving students in Georgia and beyond.
