Skyler Armstead, a graduate student in the MS Biotechnology program at Fort Valley State University, attended the Southeastern Plant Symposium in Raleigh, North Carolina (June 4-5, 2026), an event focused on horticulture, gardening, and the conservation of rare plants. The symposium was hosted by the JC Raulston Arboretum and Juniper Level Botanic Garden. Skyler received a travel scholarship and was formally recognized for this achievement, gaining access to a rich network of horticulture professionals and academics.

The symposium emphasized the role of botanical gardens in conserving plant diversity. Presentations from horticulturists around the world highlighted beautiful, rare, and often challenging-to-cultivate species across many genera, illustrating the breadth of global plant diversity and the importance of ex-situ conservation. Skyler was able to participate and learn from discussions that included plant exploration, collection, and curation, gaining a deeper appreciation for the logistics and ethics of bringing wild plants into cultivation.

Conversations with experts provided insight into career paths in horticulture, public gardens, and plant conservation, while also reinforcing the value of strong botanical foundations for applied work in breeding, and conservation. Overall, the symposium offered a formative experience that broadened Skyler’s understanding of global plant diversity, rare plant conservation, and the practical realities of maintaining living collections in botanical gardens.
