Overview

The master of public health degree program offers a course of study that prepares students to identify problems and propose solutions to a variety of environmental conditions that affect the health of minority, rural, agricultural and disadvantaged populations at disproportionate rates.

FVSU's Master of Public Health (MPH) program was developed in response to the nation's call-to-action for improved health opportunities for all with focuses on local, state, regional, and global needs.

The MPH program offers a course of study through a concentration of Environmental Health that prepares students to identify problems and propose solutions to a variety of environmental conditions that affect the health of minority, rural, and disadvantaged populations at disproportionate rates. Environmental linkages between high morbidity rates due to heart disease (i.e., hypertension and stroke), cancer and diabetes in conjunction with Healthy People 2020 will be assessed.

Through a second concentration of Agricultural Epidemiology, adverse environmental factors such as livestock rearing, farming practices, food handling, and industrial contaminants will be studied with sensitivity to cultural, regional, and ethnic differences.

Graduates of the MPH program will be capable of pursuing further study in environmental health or related fields, conducting research in the discipline, managing community health agencies, and/or providing community-based leadership designed to educate and empower citizens to form partnerships in the interest of improving the overall health of their communities.

Classes within the program are offered as a web-hybrid program for distance learners (i.e., online and traditional classroom instruction).

The Master of Public Health program is a fully accredited program through the Environmental Health Accreditation Council (EHAC). This accreditation is important to those who may be considering joining the Uniformed Public Health Service in the future, as the Service only accepts applicants from EHAC accredited programs.

3.00 GPA – undergraduate degree (regular admittance)
2.50 GPA – undergraduate degree (provisional admittance)
3 Letters of recommendation
Personal goals statement
2 copies of undergraduate transcripts

Graduation Requirements

Students will be required to take 45 credit hours of graduate level courses including 6 credit hours of Thesis Research OR Field Experience. The program may be completed in 5 semesters (at most) by full time students. It is not a requirement to attend full time in order to matriculate through the program.
