Overview

FVSU's master of science in animal science degree program provides the opportunity for advanced study of livestock and other animal species as it relates to their biological systems, behavior, health, reproduction, growth, and management of their living environments.

Program Objectives

To increase the number of students currently underrepresented in graduate education in the area of animal science
Prepare students for study toward a terminal degree
Enhance the scientific and technical knowledge base of students
Prepare students for leadership roles in a technologically advanced society through study of important and modern aspects of animal science, such as animal biotechnology, cell biology, nutrition, and product technology, with an emphasis on small ruminants.

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Animal Science offers specialization in:

Animal Nutrition
Reproduction and Cell Physiology
Animal Products Technology

Resources

The meat technology building is well equipped to process meat animals and develop value-added products.
The dairy technology building is equipped to process dairy products into nutritious value-added products.
Animal housing facilities are equipped for data collection and advanced analyses.
Eight laboratories are equipped with the latest scientific instruments to advance physiology, nutrition, and intermediary metabolism research.
Small ruminants, equine, and beef cattle are available for hands-on experience and graduate research activities.

Admission Requirements

Students who have completed a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences degree with a GPA of 2.75 or better (on a 4.0 scale) will be admitted to the program.

Students whose native language is not English will be required to fulfill regular admissions requirements and score at least 500 on TOEFL.

Graduation Requirements

Students will be required to take 37 credit hours of graduate level courses including 6 credit hours of thesis research. The program may be completed in 5 semesters (at most) by full time students.
