Akwai O. Agoons, CPA, is the controller and chief accounting officer at Fort Valley State University. In this capacity, she directs a system of internal controls to ensure that university assets are adequately safeguarded and all financial reporting is free of material misstatements. Her responsibilities include preparation accurate financial reports which include, but are not limited to the Annual Financial Report (AFR), Budgetary Compliance Report (BCR), Annual Expenditure Report (AER), Public Private Venture
(PPV) cash flow statement, and component unit files. She also supervises audit coordination and document preparation for the state of Georgia, Board of Regents, and internal audits; ensure responses to auditor questions and additional requests are provided in a timely manner. In addition, she monitors cash flow projections and supervises the operations of the following areas: Accounts Payable, Travel and Expense, Auxiliary Services, Student Financial Services, Grants Accounting, Payroll, Procurement, Central Receiving, and Asset Management.

Prior to joining Fort Valley State University, Ms. Agoons was budget manager at Georgia College and State University. There, she built comprehensive budget projections for all academic support institutional departments, provided oversight of departmental transactions and related processes, prepared reports and analysis of revenue and expenditure activity for divisions as requested, monitored and amended budgets allocated for full-time benefitted positions and managed the nonresident alien tax compliance system. Ms. Agoons earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting with a minor in finance and a Master of Accountancy degree, both from Georgia College and State University.
